Authorities later identified one of the drivers involved in the collision as 19-year-old Tripp M. Dwyer of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Emergency responders arriving at the scene discovered that one passenger, later identified as 19-year-old Walker W. Fendley of Charlottesville, had been ejected from the vehicle during the collision. All three occupants suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to UVA Health for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Fendley later died from the injuries he sustained in the crash.
Police believe speed was a contributing factor in the Fontaine Avenue Extended accident, though the investigation remains ongoing. Officials have not yet released additional details regarding the driver or the condition of the other injured occupants.
